Vegetated green roofs consist of a layer of lightweight soil and low-growing, drought-tolerant plants on top of traditional roofing materials.  Green roofs help absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, and reduce stormwater runoff -- while looking attractive, reducing heating and cooling costs, and long-term maintenance costs.

Green roofs are used extensively in Europe to save energy and reduce stormwater runoff.  Locally, they can be seen in Boston at City Hall, the Children's Mueseum, the World Trade Center, the Ikea in Stoughton, and the new headquarters of the Ipswich River Watershed Association.
